Cornish football is off to North Macedonia this summer after the Kernow Football Alliance had their qualification for the CONIFA World Football Cup confirmed.
Skopje, the capital of the Republic of North Macedonia, will play host to the tournament which will consist of 16 teams.
Following wins over a Foxhole Stars XI, St Dennis, Barawa and the Chagos Islands, Kernow have qualified from the European section alongside South Ossetia, Western Armenia, Parishes of Jersey and reigning champions Karpatalya.
There will be four teams from Africa represented – Matabeleland, Kabylia, Darfur and Western Sahara – three from Asia – Tamil Eelam, Panjab and United Koreans in Japan – and one each from North America (Cascadia), Oceania (Australian First Nations) and South America (Mapuche).
Chagos Islands will also be there after receiving a ‘global ticket’.
“This is certainly a good time for Cornish football and Cornwall in general,” said Kernow FA chairman Jason Heaton. “We should celebrate this moment and acknowledge the effort it has taken to get here.
“Cornwall has before it a unique and genuinely exciting opportunity to excel and prove itself on the biggest stage available. For Cornish football this is as big as it gets.
“We need to get behind the players and make sure we create the very best opportunity to win this tournament.”
Director of Football, Andrew Bragg, added: “What an amazing achievement, an historic event in Cornwall’s sporting history.
“The Cornish race are a very proud people and do not do things in half measures so our aim now is to go to North Macedonia and bring home the World Cup.
“We know we have the quality both on and off the pitch to achieve this and hope that we do Cornwall proud. It would be amazing to take a Trelawny’s Army of fans with us.
CONIFA is the international governing body for football teams not affiliated with FIFA. The draw for the tournament will be held at their AGM in Jersey on the weekend of January 24-26, 2020.
